Knights romp Mustangs in new home
For the first time since 2003, the Castle Knights were able to celebrate a victory on their home field.
The Knights won their first game in their newly reopened on-campus stadium, starting their Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East schedule last night with a 34-6 win over Windward neighbor Kalaheo.
Castle played all of its games the last two seasons away from the Kaneohe home while the stadium was being renovated, and lost to Campbell a week earlier in its return.
Last night, the Knights scored early -- reaching the end zone on the game's first drive -- and overcame 14 penalties to pull away and spoil the Mustangs' debut in the Red East.
"It was by no way, shape or form a pretty win," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "I think we have a lot of areas we need to work on. But an ugly win is better than a pretty loss, so we're pretty happy about that."
Castle senior quarterback Bryson Ukauka scored twice on short runs to give Castle the early lead. Receiver/defensive back Jesse Humalon returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and caught a scoring pass from Ukauka midway through the third.
Humalon, a senior, missed all of last season due to a neck injury suffered in an accident at the beach. He had four titanium bolts surgically inserted into his neck and was cleared to play this season.
"It feels really good, we haven't played here for two years. I've been waiting to play for a whole year because I was held back because of my injury," Humalon said. "We played good, we made a lot of mental mistakes, but we came together and pulled it through."
Castle was assessed 75 yards in penalties in the first half and ran just 15 plays on offense before halftime as Kalaheo controlled the clock with its option attack led by quarterback Cody vonAppen.
The Knights took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards on 10 plays, taking the lead on Ukauka's quarterback sneak.
Kalaheo answered with a 14-play drive of its own, getting to within a yard of the goal line. The Mustangs appeared to score, but a holding penalty pushed them back and a field-goal attempt went wide right.
A 14-yard sweep around the left side by Humalon and Ukauka's second quarterback sneak gave Castle a 14-0 lead at the 10-minute mark.
Kalaheo broke through when vonAppen lofted a pass to Bruce Andrews on a fade pattern for a 10-yard touchdown.
The Mustangs then recovered a squib kick, but ended up falling further behind when Humalon intercepted a vonAppen pass, sprinted up the sideline, then raced across the field for an 85-yard TD return.
"When I ran down the side they overpursued. I just had to cutback and all the blocks were there and it just opened up," Humalon said.
Both teams play interleague contests this week. Castle hosts Saint Louis, while Kalaheo will try to regroup for a game with Pac-Five at Kailua's field.
"I want (the Mustangs) to let this go, I want them to immediately start thinking about next week's game," first-year Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said. "This is ancient history. This is behind us.
"Seventy to nothing bothers me way less than 14-13, that's why we went for it on fourth down. We're here to play ball, we're not here to save face. We're here to compete at the top-notch levels."
No. 1 Punahou 21, Waianae 12
Brett Kan passed for 221 yards to Miah Ostrowski, tossed 335 total yards and threw for a touchdown as the top-ranked Buffanblu defeated the host Seariders.
Ostrowski caught 12 passes, and Kyle Whitford added 72 yards on four catches.
Dan Kekoanui and David Ferreira combined for 129 rushing yards for Waianae.
