Defense sparks Red Raiders to victory
After a slow start, defending state champion Kahuku rolls -- and runs -- past Kailua
Although they were the home team, it took a while for the Kahuku Red Raiders to show up for their regular-season opener last night.
The defending Division I state champions spotted Kailua a 10-0 lead before storming back for a 29-16 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East victory.
Kahuku quarterback Richard Torres' wizardry on the option helped the Red Raiders erase the deficit before halftime, and the defense smothered the Surfriders from the second quarter on to seal the win.
"It just took one spark, it took a defensive spark," first-year Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "We talked about that at halftime -- it shouldn't take a spark, we should be more composed than that. We have to try to do a better job as far as keeping our composure playing smart football. We have to go back to the basics."
Kahuku's defense played without standout lineman Kaniela Tuipulotu, who hurt his ankle against Punahou last week, but accounted for two scores -- a safety and a fumble recovery for a touchdown -- to help the Red Raiders pull away.
The running game remained the staple of the Kahuku offense, and Lehi Aumua carried the bulk of the load with 94 yards on 10 carries. Richard Torres kept the ball 11 times and finished with 65 yards.
"He's a small quarterback, but he's really composed," Reggie Torres said.
Kailua seized the momentum early with a bit of trickery when Gerald Ho found a wide-open Darren Sugimoto on a halfback-option pass for a 47-yard gain to the Kahuku 15.

Kahuku appeared to thwart the threat when Torres intercepted a Zachary Akamine pass and raced to the end zone. But the play was nullified by a personal-foul call on the Red Raiders, and the Surfriders scored two plays later on a toss from Akamine to Shaun Forges.
A Kahuku fumble late in the quarter gave Kailua possession deep in Red Raider territory. The Surfriders settled for a field goal by Timothy Maghinay and led 10-0 at the 11:01 mark of the second quarter.
But the lead didn't last long.
Kahuku's offense got into gear on the ensuing series, which began with Aumua's 27-yard dash and ended with Torres keeping the ball on an option play for a 27-yard touchdown run.
After Kailua fumbled the ball away at its own 33, Torres led Kahuku on a five-play march and scored on a 4-yard run to give the Red Raiders their first lead.
They added to the cushion when Akamine was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety.
The Surfriders had a chance to tie the game after recovering a fumble at the Kahuku 7 just before halftime. But they came away empty and the Red Raiders continued to roll.
"I think it was a matter of momentum," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich. "We had some going and then we gave it back to them through the turnovers and they were disciplined enough to capitalize. We're young, but it's early in the season and hopefully we'll recover."
After the break, the Kahuku defense didn't allow Kailua to cross midfield and chipped in when Sifa Heimuli recovered a fumble in the end zone. Kaliki Unga's 5-yard TD run put the game out of reach.
Kailua added a late touchdown when Sugimoto came down with a tipped pass from Akamine for a 30-yard score.
