Rainbow Wahine hope to add a road trip in ’06

Dear Volleyball Fan:

The past couple of years the Rainbow Wahine were denied access to a final-four fantasy-land extravaganza. True, veteran head coach Dave Shoji enjoyed postseason success on these most recent journeys, advancing to the final-four border twice.

[Wahine Highways] But having to settle for regional losses when the promise of a final four was in the air is kind of like telling the kids they're going to Disneyland and settling for a local amusement park, instead.

So, here we go again. Pack up the car, make sure the dog has food and water, check your tickets to verify the destination is Omaha and let's see what happens. The first part of this trip is a long one, including stops in WAC outposts such as Ruston, La.; Las Cruces, N.M; Boise, Idaho; and Logan, Utah. You can almost hear Johnny Cash singing, "I've Been Everywhere, Man."

If that goes well, it's possible Hawaii will have to go on the road once more for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament in hopes of a return regional engagement in the Stan Sheriff Center. The winner gets an all-expense-paid trip to Nebraska in the winter time.

Normally, only a fool would call that a vacation. But for Shoji and his Rainbow Wahine, it's like a summer night in Disneyland.

Aloha,
