Watabu advances at U.S. Amateur

U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Casey Watabu of Kapaa beat Canada's James Love 1 up to advance to the second round of the U.S. Amateur Championship yesterday at Caska, Minn.

He was one of 32 golfers who made it through yesterday's first round of match play, which followed Tuesday's stroke-play qualifier.

Tway moved on in the match play competition at Hazeltine National beating the 20-year-old Saltman, who played in the 2005 British Open and was a member of Great Britain and Ireland's Walker Cup team.

The tournament continues today with second- and third-round matches and concludes Sunday with a 36-hole final.

Penn gets UFC title shot

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced yesterday that Hilo's B.J. Penn will face Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight championship Sept. 23 at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, Calif.

Penn is replacing Canada's Georges St. Pierre, who pulled out of the fight after suffering a groin injury. St. Pierre defeated Penn by split decision in a fight back in March to originally earn the title shot.

The championship fight will be a rematch of a 2004 fight in which Penn (10-3-1) stepped up to the 170-pound weight class for the first time and defeated Hughes (39-4) by submission in the first round to win the title. It's the only loss Hughes has suffered in his last 19 fights.
