Vercruyssen takes gold at Pan-Am gymnastics
Roosevelt High ninth-grader Nani Vercruyssen won the United States' only gold medal at the Pan-American Trampoline Championship over the weekend.
Vercruyssen, 14, outscored all of the junior competitors, male and female. She had the fourth-most-difficult routine at the event, with 21 flips and nine twists in 10 bounces.
She'll compete against senior gymnasts in October at the All-Japan Championships.
U.S. longboarding championship this week
The nation's top pro longboarders are coming to Kuhio Beach in Waikiki for the U.S. championship, Wednesday through Saturday.
The Corona Hawaiian Open, presented by Longboard Magazine, is the last in a series of three events comprising the U.S. Professional Longboard Surfing Championship.
Taylor Jensen of San Diego leads the ratings going into the final event. San Clemente High School senior Troy Mothershead trails Jensen by 160 points. In the women's division, Marissa Barry leads the field, but is expected to be chased by a large group of competitors.
