ICHIRIKI DEBUT
JOHN BERGER / JBERGER@STARBULLETIN.COM
Bruce Shimabukuro and waitress Miyuki Mayazaki, third from left, welcomed Tammy Maeda, left, Rebecca Pang and Krislyn Hashimoto to the pre-opening dinner party for Ichiriki, Riki Kobayashi's new nabe restaurant, on Aug. 4. Shimabukuro and his BS Band provided the background music as Kobayashi's guests experimented with the do-it-yourself Japanese cooking in which items are cooked in boiling broth. The semiprivate dining areas added to the intimacy of the evening. CLICK FOR LARGE

ONE-MAN SHOW
JOHN BERGER / JBERGER@STARBULLETIN.COM
Art photographer Victor Giordino, left, was the guest of honor at a party hosted by Sachi Braden, center, and her husband, Brad Coates, when Giordino's one-man show opened at the Pegge Hopper Gallery on Aug. 3. The photos in Giordino's "Hawaii Square" series were shot in black and white with a Hasselblad camera and printed from 2 1/4-inch negatives on archival silver rag paper. Some are studies of scenic spots on Kauai and Oahu; others are more abstract (Braden is holding a package of Giordino's greeting cards). Christine Bregar, second from left, and gallery owner Hopper, right, also enjoyed the event. CLICK FOR LARGE

A NEW VERDICT
JOHN BERGER / JBERGER@STARBULLETIN.COM
Marvin Dang, left, was the moderator, Howard Luke represented the defendants, Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona was the judge and David Farmer the prosecutor in a re-creation of the Massie case at the American Bar Association convention Aug. 3. Farmer did his best to prove the case against five local men in the rape of Thalia Massie on Sept. 12, 1931, but the defense showed that one of the defendants had punched a woman on the other side of town at the time of the alleged rape. The audience voted unanimously for acquittal -- a better verdict based on the evidence than in 1931. CLICK FOR LARGE
