Hawaii loses first game at legion regional
Cameron Bayne went 3-for-5 and Ridge Carpenter drove in four runs but Hawaii lost to Las Vegas 14-9 at an American Legion regional at Albuquerque, N.M., yesterday.
Hawaii (1-1) will play undefeated Tucson, Ariz., in the double-elimination tournament today.
Kang Invitational gearing up again
The Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball tournament is scheduled for Aug. 16-19 at the Iolani School upper and lower gymnasiums.
General admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students. The matches start at 9 a.m. each day except Aug. 18 when play begins at 2 p.m.
There are 19 teams entered from Oahu, California and Utah. California powerhouses Los Alamos and Ira Costa return to defend their titles.

Hilo puts out call for volleyball players
The Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team will hold open tryouts Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Participants must be full-time registered UHH students for the 2006-07 academic year. For more information, call the Vulcan volleyball office at 974-7698.
Papa John's holding UH Kids' Club promotion
Memberships for the UH Kids' Club will be available beginning August 21 at all Papa John's Pizza Hawaii stores on Oahu. The purchase of a large pizza at regular menu price will secure one club membership and additional memberships are just $10 each. Members must be in eighth grade or under.
Members will enjoy additional benefits and a host of great activities at University of Hawaii men's and women's sporting events during the 2006-07 academic year.
In addition to a free T-shirt and a free Hanai Bear, members will receive special benefits from Blockbuster and the Fun Factory.
UH Kids' Club members enjoy weekly e-newsletters, free attendance at club receptions, merchandise discounts at Hilo Hattie and Rainbowtique, the opportunity to join UH teams on the court during pre-game ceremonies, special ticket discounts, and participation in UH promotions exclusive to club members.
Golf Association holding learning center
The First Tee of Oahu, formerly the North Shore Junior Golf Association, will open its Camp Homelani golf learning center on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m.
The event is open to the public and families and youngsters interested in signing up for the program and those interested in volunteering with the program.

Waikiki Roughwater Swim opens registration
The 37th Waikiki Roughwater Swim, a 2.4-mile open ocean swim, will be held Sept. 4 starting at 9 a.m. at Waikiki Beach.
