Open house focuses on PE in isle schools
Residents are invited to an open house from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McKinley High School to learn how physical education is taught in Hawaii's public schools.
The Hawaii Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is hosting the event in Hirata Hall to increase awareness and support for physical education in the schools.
"Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, and Hawaii's PE teachers feel they need to be part of the solution to that epidemic," the association said in a news release. "If the problem is not adequately addressed, this generation of children is predicted to be the first in American history to not outlive its parents."
Speakers will include Gregg Agena, 2006 National Association for Sports and Physical Education Middle School Teacher of the Year, and Kay Bicoy, the association's 2006 Southwest District High School Teacher of the Year, along with Hawaii physical educators.
Parents, policymakers and interested residents will see how students are taught to maintain their health throughout their lives.
