Immediately after reading my review of the IHOP in the Ohana Malia Hotel, a reader from Joliet, Ill., e-mailed, "Go to IHOPs (sic) Funnel Cake Carnival and get their funnel cake. Better than pancakes or most anything else they have."
I didn't have the heart to tell him I did try the funnel cake ... and chose not to mention it.
With fair season coming to a close, funnel cake fans need not go into hibernation. Outside the Wyland Art Gallery at Kalakaua Avenue and Beachwalk is a kiosk that makes the statement "World's Best Funnel Cake."
There, you can eat your fill of this 8-inch lacy round of fried dough at $4.99 for a generous dusting of cinnamon or powdered sugar topping. Or choose chocolate, caramel or strawberry glaze for $5.99.
If you can't make up your mind, double up on toppings, and make sure you eat it while it's hot.

After splurging on Michael Bublé tickets last week, I thought I'd be a little more frugal this weekend. Good intentions will have to wait, though, because it's time for Band Camp IV.
What fan of alternative music could turn down the lineup of Rock Kills Kid, The Fray, Hot Hot Heat and Hoobastank? If the bands are half as entertaining on stage as individual members were in conversation -- and by the way, they're as different in personality as they are in their range of music -- I know this show will be a great summer classic. For details, see Page 4.

I'm a wuss. Although I like reading or hearing a good ghost story or stories of the supernatural, I cannot handle watching "adult" spooky movies -- not even if they're rated PG-13. I can, however, handle the animated children's spooky movies and "Monster House" was just my speed. The story was interesting and there was one part in the movie where my 32-year-old friend actually jumped. We caught the movie at Dole Cannery, which is the only place where you can catch it in 3D. It's really cool. If you're the type to get motion sickness, just close your eyes during the first five to eight minutes. After that it should be smooth sailing.
