3 still alive in Yumeya Tahara Pro
Hawaii's Dustin Cuizon, Randall Paulson and Sean Moody advanced to the Round of 48 yesterday at the ASP World Tour's Yumeya Tahara Pro at Akabane Beach, Japan.
Hawaii's Hank Gaskell turned in the day's best score -- 18 out of a possible 20 -- in winning his heat in the Round of 144. But he was eliminated in the next round amid small, choppy conditions.
The contest is scheduled to continue today and run through Sunday.
Warriors sign second freshman hitter
Nemanja Komar, a 6-foot-3 freshman outside hitter from Stepanovicevo, Serbia, has signed a scholarship agreement to play volleyball for Hawaii this coming season.
"Nemanja is a very dynamic outside attacker," Warrior coach Mike Wilton said.
Komar is the second athlete to sign with the Warriors in the past three days. Hawaii received the paperwork from Matias Brizuela, a 6-2 outside hitter from Paraguay, on Monday.
The Warriors open small-group workouts Aug. 28. The fall preseason includes the University of British Columbia Invitational in Canada Oct. 13-14 and two exhibition matches with Long Beach State at the Stan Sheriff Center Nov. 3-4.
Frick 5th at European Championship
Hawaii diver Magnus Frick finished fifth in men's 1-meter springboard at yesterday's European Swimming Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Frick, competing for his native Sweden, scored 371.15 points. Finland's Joona Puhakka won the event with 425 points.
In June, Frick won both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events at the Swedish Nationals. He transferred to UH this past spring, sitting out the semester.
Pearl City wins opener of Little League regional
Robert Brown tossed a six-hit shutout and Chace Numata and Justin Protacio each drove in two runs as Pearl City defeated Cascade, Wash., 10-0 in its opening game of the Junior Little League Western Regional yesterday at Beaverton, Ore.
Brown struck out five in six innings and added two hits. Pearl City was scheduled to play Utah at 6 this morning Hawaii time. After taking tomorrow off, Pearl City will be back on the field Saturday against Idaho at Noon.
» Bryson Nakamura and Ryno Acosta combined on a two-hit shutout and Nakamura added three hits and a RBI as Pearl City defeated Northern California 7-0 in the Senior Little League Western Regional yesterday at Salem, Ore.
Acosta added two hits of his own and Jeff Domingo and John Abreu each drove in two runs. Pearl City will next play Arizona Saturday at 1 p.m.
Baseball greats to be feted by JCC
Former University of Hawaii coach Les Murakami, Japan Baseball Hall of Famer Wally Yonamine and Oahu AJA Baseball co-founder Masao Koike will be honored at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii's Celebration of Leadership and Achievement dinner Sept. 30 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Ballroom.
Murakami won 1,079 games in his 30-year career with the Rainbows. Yonamine, who also played pro football, was involved in Japan's professional baseball league for more than 30 years, as a player, coach and manager. Koike was instrumental in organizing AJA baseball and softball leagues on Oahu.
