HFD welcomes 5 new fire vehicles
Five new firetrucks were officially added yesterday to the Honolulu Fire Department's fleet of emergency vehicles.
Three new Quantum Pierce pumpers and two Rescue Apparatus vehicles were blessed at HFD's Kakaako headquarters.
The pumpers cost $420,000 each. The rescue vehicles cost $529,926 each, for a total cost of $2.3 million in new equipment.
The vehicles were bought with city and federal funds.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann said the cost was necessary so that firefighters can do their job and respond to emergencies with the proper equipment.
"There can be no compromise when it comes to public safety," Hannemann said.
The three Quantum Pumpers will be assigned to the Kuakini, Kaneohe and Waianae fire stations. The two Rescue Apparatus vehicles will be located at the Pawaa and Kalihi Kai fire stations.
Fire officials said they usually need to rotate new vehicles into their fleet every 10 to 15 years, with the old vehicles becoming backup engines and pumpers while the old backup vehicles are now used for scrap parts or sold off.
