Warriors sign hitter from Paraguay
Matias Brizuela, a 6-foot-2 freshman outside hitter from Paraguay, has accepted a scholarship offer to play volleyball for Hawaii this coming season.
"Matias is one of two new scholarship student-athletes for (us)," Warrior coach Mike Wilton said. "He is a powerful passer-hitter with a very good jump serve and solid all-around game. We expect that he will be very much in the hunt to break into our lineup this year."
Hawaii opens the fall preseason with a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, to compete in the UBC Tournament Oct. 13-14. The Warriors will host Long Beach State in exhibitions Nov. 3-4 at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Preseason honors for UH soccer players
Hawaii midfielder Jessica Domingo and defender Koren Takeyama were named to the preseason All-Western Athletic Conference soccer team yesterday.
Both were first-team All-WAC selections last season as sophomores in helping UH to the league's regular-season championship. UH was second in the preseason coaches poll.
Cortney Sobrero of Fresno State was voted the preseason offensive player of the year, while teammate Rochelle Jagdeo was the defensive player of the year.
Hawaii judoka fare well at open meet
Hawaii players won 20 medals, including 11 gold, as the USA Judo U.S. Open concluded competition Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Sisters Teniya and Teshya Alo of Hawaii Tenri Judo won their respective divisions, Teniya the bantam 23-kilogram and Teshya the intermediate 1 26kg. Also in intermediate 1 26kg, Jessica Oda from Shobukan Judo placed third.
Winning gold in boys intermediate 1 were: Noah Pineda-Abaya, 26kg; Joshua Terao, 30kg; Chade Wong, 34kg; and Kulana Salera, 38kg.
Gold in girls intermediate 2 went to Melinda Chow, 48kg. In boys intermediate 2, the winners were: Jacob Palimo'o, 34kg; Chaeden Grace-Reyes, 38kg; Nahoakuwoo Salera, 42kg; Dane Pestano 58-plus kg.
Kids golf title for Corpuz
Allisen Corpuz of Waipahu finished at 10-under 98 to win the 8-and-under division of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., over the weekend.
Corpuz finished seven shots ahead of runner-up Claire Amelia Legaspi of the Philippines. The younger age groups played three rounds on nine-hole, par-36 courses.
Cyd Okino of Honolulu finished third in the Girls 12 division with a three-day total of 216.
» Jarrett Hamamoto of Hilo ended the weekend with a four-round total of 273 to tie for fifth at the Long Beach Open. After opening with a 73, Hamamoto carded consecutive rounds of 66 and closed with a 68 to finish five stokes off the lead. He earned $5,666 for the week.
Silverswords sign 3 transfers
The Chaminade women's basketball team added three players to its roster for its inaugural season.
The Silverswords announced the signing of Simrin Cummins, Marian Murphy and Katherine Carlisle yesterday. Cummins averaged 9.5 points at Linn Benton (Ore.) Community College last season. Murphy started at Solano College (Calif.) and Carlisle averaged 13 points at Grays Harbor College.
Youth football coaches needed for clinic
An NFL sponsored Junior Player Development (JPD) Football Clinic is seeking volunteer coaches to work with the 12-to-14-year olds at the free event Aug. 19.
Volunteers will be trained by the NFL JPD youth coaching staff. Coaches will receive at no cost a JPD training DVD, a practice manual, coaching shirt, jacket, shorts, and hat. A coaches meeting will be held Saturday. For more information, call 696-6725 or 782-3937.
Hockey and Golf Challenge benefits MADD
The 2006 Hockey & Golf Challenge will be held Aug. 2-3 with proceeds benefiting MADD-Hawaii. The event sponsored by the NHL Alumni Association, opens with a golf tournament at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course. It continues the next day at the Ice Palace with a media hockey shootout against NHL alumni and a 3-on-3 tournament.
