UH geology professor honored with award
Julia Hammer, an associate professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was given the Presidential Early Career award for Scientists and Engineers.
This is the highest honor for the most promising researchers in their field, according to a release. She was nominated by the National Science Foundation.
Hammer was recognized at a White House ceremony Wednesday for her research in volcanology and experimental petrology.
She works at the forefront of a new field that uses data derived from experiments and theory to understand how volcanoes behave during eruptions. Hammer has built an experimental petrology laboratory capable of studying geologic materials at high temperatures and pressures.
She is also working with K-12 teachers to educate students on volcanoes, which are central to the cultural and geologic heritage of Hawaii.
The Harmony Lodge No. 3 has given $100 to the American Lung Association of Hawaii for its Comprehensive Childhood Asthma Management Program. The Morgan Stanley Foundation also donated $9,500 to the lung association's four Asthma Sports Day Camps for children 5 through 12.
