Art scene takes over Haleiwa
Haleiwa Town is famous as the isle's "artsy" community, with its small boutiques of bohemian clothing and intimate art galleries. In 1997, after many years of pushing ideas around in their heads, a group of local art advocates and artists solidified the area's commitment to art and culture by creating the nonprofit Haleiwa Arts Festival, dedicated to promoting the arts, especially in the North Shore community.
The first Haleiwa Arts Festival was held in 1998, attracting folks islewide to see and learn art, hear music and watch dance, and eat good food, all in the picturesque setting that is Haleiwa Town.
Since 1999, the festival has provided $19,000 to support fine arts education in nine area schools. The festival also supports local artists and exposes the public to career opportunities in the arts.
This year, the two-day festival includes Celtic music, opera, jazz and hula, as well as storytelling, keiki art projects, food booths and the works of more than 100 artists. Free trolley tours of historic Haleiwa and Waialua towns will also be offered, the tours given by volunteers from the North Shore Chamber of Commerce Historic Preservation Committee.
