Punahou’s Kono fifth at Rolex tournament

Punahou's Stephanie Kono shot 5-over-par 75 yesterday to place fifth in the girls division at the American Junior Golf Association's Rolex Tournament of Champions at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo.

Moanalua's Tadd Fujikawa shot 3-over 73 and finished in a four-way tie for 16th place in the boys division.

Kono's only two birdies of the final round came on the second and 15th holes, both par-5s, and she closed the four-day tournament at 12-over 292.

Ashleigh Simon of South Africa also shot 75 yesterday and hung on to win the tournament by one stroke over Arizona's Taylore Karle with a total of 6-over 286.

Fujikawa shot even-par on the front nine yesterday, then went 3 over on the back to close at 289.

Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz., won the boys title by a single stroke over Peter Uihlein at 278.

Fujikawa is among six Hawaii players entered in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which begins today at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Other with tee-times this morning are Sean Maekawa of Paauilo, Chan Kim of Honolulu, Casey Watabu of Kapaa, Lee Sakugawa of Wailuku and Kevin Shimomura of Lahaina.
