The Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library has assembled an 800-piece collection of martial arts DVDs and books.

A wide range of martial arts materials is available at the Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library.

"I wanted it to be as broad-ranging as possible, to include as many martial arts styles, and to keep it mostly positive, emphasizing things like character development and moral and ethical values," branch manager Duane Wenzel said.

The collection focuses on the major Chinese, Japanese and Korean disciplines.

The material has been available for checkout since February but will be formally introduced in a ceremony tomorrow. "I always wanted to initiate the collection with a lion dance, for a more auspicious beginning," Wenzel said.

So at 5:30 p.m. the Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association will perform, followed by a kung fu demonstration.

Wenzel said he collected the materials over a two-year period, purchased through the library's regular material budget.

The collection includes a comprehensive selection of books, and DVDs covering instruction, mixed martial arts (including ultimate fighting matches both Hawaii and abroad) and classic and contemporary movies covering kung fu, samurai and Asian-action cinema.

A fee of $1 is charged for each DVD borrowed, with a seven-day loan period.

The library is at 3225 Salt Lake Blvd. Call 831-6831.
