Haig, Damon, hula dancers raise $7,000 for kids' charity

Five hula dancers from Cathy Ostrem's group, including Michael Haig, raised a quick seven grand for the Children's Alliance of Hawaii fund-raiser at the Pacific Club Monday. It started when J.P. Damon offered to contribute $1,000 to the cause if his cousin Michael would dance a hula. Two other people said they would each donate $1,000 if Mike danced. So he took the stage. Then he called on Pat Gamble, Jojo Watumull, Kristin Lee and Alice Robinson and said if they would dance hula with him he would contribute $1,000 each to the charity. They agreed and the Ostrem quintet danced to music played by Gary Pacarro's Tropic Breeze ...

Grand Cafe Chef Tony Vierra picked Bali Chef Adam Hightower to prepare a fifth anniversary dinner for him and wife Nicole June 23. They dined on Adam's Kampachi special ... Hilton Village has booked the Pointer Sisters for New Year's Eve ... The Halekulani's "Joy of Riesling," with tastings of some of Germany's top rieslings and Exec Chef Daryl Fujita's food stations, runs today and tomorrow. Call 931-5040 for reservations. Carroll retiring after 37 years with liquor panel

An aloha luncheon was held Tuesday for John Carroll, chief investigator for the Liquor Commission, who retires tomorrow after 37 years. Cookie Isaacs had Earl McDonald's catering outfit provide a fab spread at the commission office. Attending were John's mom Marian, daughter Brandy, and Buzzy Hong, Bert Tokairin, Kenneth Hoo and Carl Reber ... Sorry to learn of the deaths of longtime friends: Attorney Al Shim, 82, died last Saturday; interior designer and arts patron Phyllis Spalding Bowen, 86, died June 23; and the rival daily's friendly and dedicated former baseball writer Ferd Borsch, 77, went up to the Big Diamond in the Sky Sunday. Condolences to their families ... No Wood Craft for two weeks as I will be on vacation until July 17 ...
