Wie has supporters to spare
THIS column has to be good. There's no turning back. I've only packed one suit, one shirt, one tie.
» Tony Kornheiser, on ESPN, this week, on Michelle Wie playing against men again, at the 84 Lumber Classic this September: "OK, but make a cut already, honey, or stop it. Even I'm getting bored." Kornheiser has been an enthusiastic Wie booster.
I'm not that excited anymore about Michelle playing against men, either. She's done it so often it's not "different," these days. It's just what she does. She's made it seem normal. And so in a way it's a tribute to her that the thrill is gone. Well, for me and Tony, anyway.
The galleries are still excited, hugely so. And that's the only audience that counts.
» So in firing him "for cause," the Knicks are trying to do the old Evan Dobelle routine on Larry Brown. Yeah, Brown will probably come out of it the way Dobelle did. (i.e., Not poor.)
Larry, just don't call the Orlando Magic asking about what the head coach makes while using a funny voice.
Dobelle. I miss that guy. His hiring -- and firing -- was a complete disaster, but he was a lot of fun.
» UH is ousted by Oregon State, Oregon State goes on to the College World Series final, um, series. Does this mean that Hawaii is the ninth-best team in the country?
(Well, no. But it is pretty cool.)
» With Nebraska, and now Oregon State, making multiple trips to the CWS, it shows that it's all possible in college baseball, these days. When cold-weather schools build programs to this level, having to face the kind of competition you find in two of the toughest conferences in the country, it's all possible.
You have to believe it can happen at Hawaii. Again.
» We should check in with Road Runner and Hawaiian Telcom on Monday to see if the Internet lines are loaded with extra traffic with the convergence of UH's new online ticket system and the opening of football season-ticket sales for new buyers.
» Here's one Herman Frazier can throw out at us: This month, Colorado gave its athletic department an $8 million loan in order to help balance its budget!
Makes sense. CU had to pay for Dan Hawkins, had to pay off Gary Barnett. At least UH is paying only one football coach at a time, these days (wasn't it three at once, not so long ago?).
» The mystery "magic bowl" in the Miami Heat locker room was 120,000 "15 Strong" cards? The strangest thing may have been that Pat Riley had 120,000 of those things printed. He needed to find something to do with them ... hey, I'll dump them in this bowl!
