Arena "should have played Ching" against Ghana
Asked if he would change any decision he made at this World Cup, U.S. head coach Bruce Arena said he probably should have brought muscular forward Brian Ching, a Kamehameha graduate from Haleiwa, into the game against Ghana. He said he did not regret placing midfielder John O'Brien on the roster, even though O'Brien played sparingly because of chronic injuries. There was really no other option, Arena said.
Andy Irons wins ASP event in Mexico
Kauai's Andy Irons topped Taylor Knox yesterday to win the final of the Rip Curl Search Mexico.
The surfers' top two waves made up their scores with Irons' total of 16.86 holding up against Knox, who finished at 11.33.
With the win, Irons ranks second in the Foster's ASP Men's World Tour Ratings with 4,140 points, trailing Kelly Slater (4,233).
Kim, Merkle lead Junior World qualifiers
Chan Kim tied the course record at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course by shooting a 63 during yesterday's qualifier for the Junior World Golf Championship.
Kim finished the 36-hole qualifier at 14-under 130 to lead the Boys 15-17 division. Kristina Merkle topped the Girls 15-17 division at 140.
Bradley Shigezawa won the Boys 13-14 division at 136 and Dayna Bersamin of Kihei was the top girls qualifier at 144.
Other division winners were: Kyung Kim (Girls 11-12), Lorens Chan (Boys 11-12), Eimi Koga (Girls 9-10), Richard Hattori (Boys 9-10), Allisen Son Corpuz (Girls 7-8) and Kyle Suppa (Boys 7-8).
More honors for UH's Wright
Hawaii pitcher Steven Wright has been named to a fourth All-America team, earning second-team honors from Rivals.com.
Wright, the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, was also named to All-America teams by the National Baseball Foundation, Baseball America and Louisville Slugger.
Wright went 11-2 with a 2.30 earned-run average and 123 strikeouts in his junior season.
Rainbows to face Hofstra in Alaska
The Hawaii basketball team will spend its Thanksgiving night on the court against Hofstra in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 23.
Pairings for the eight-team tournament were announced this week with the Rainbow Warriors facing a Hofstra team that went 26-7 last season and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT.
If UH wins the opener, its semifinal game against Marshall or California will be televised on ESPN2. The tournament opens Nov. 22 with Loyola-Marymount taking on host Alaska-Anchorage and Missouri-Kansas City facing Pacific.
