Big Isle police halt alleged plot to slay officers
Big Island police are investigating an alleged plot to kill two Hilo officers assigned to the Ice Task Force and their families.
Detectives learned of the plans and intervened before they were carried out, police said.
Police arrested a 37-year-old Hilo man for allegedly threatening to harm the officers.
Francis O. Carter, also known as "Adobo," of Hilo was arrested on two counts of suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening. He was recently released from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center after posting a $100,000 bond.
Carter was in custody for drug offenses being investigated by the Ice Task Force, police said.
Police said the early intervention prevented any overt acts from being committed, so police have not sought attempted-murder charges.
However, police may pursue charges of conspiracy to commit murder against Carter.
