COMING UP
Romancing the corals
June, spoon, honeymoon -- the romance of the season works its way down the food chain all the way to Hawaii's coral beds. For those who'd like to observe this natural occurrence, the Waikiki Aquarium presents "Coral Spawning & Summer Lovin'" from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Rice coral spawn two to four days after the new moons in June and July, and the reproductive act is easy to observe in the clear waters of the "Edge of the Reef" exhibit. The event includes a gallery tour and refreshments, as well as a crash course on other forms of marine courtship.
Other reef animals also do the deed at this time of year, including sea urchins, sea cucumbers and fish, so the night viewing could provide other voyeuristic experiences as well.
Cost is $16, $12 for members. Pre-payment required; call 923-9741.
