For every person who goes to a restaurant and walks out thinking, "The chef is a genius; I could never do this," there's another who thinks, "I can do much better at home."
But many a home chef must work around limitations of non-commercial equipment and availability of ingredients. One of these would-be home chefs recently asked why he can't get osso bucco and rack of lamb at the supermarkets.
Oh, but he can. Foodland is offering them through Tuesday at $9.99 and $11.99 per pound, respectively, and not just because Father's Day is around the corner. As diners grow increasingly sophisticated, the homegrown supermarket chain is trying to keep up by offering such a selection year 'round for those who want to bring fine dining home.
If you can't find it at your neighborhood store, try checking with the Beretania (946-4654) or Market City (734-6303) stores.

Hey, it's the summer, so now's as good as time as any to start that fitness program you've been promising yourself to start. I recommend going to your nearest neighborhood YMCA and signing up. I pay $40 a month to use the facilities at the Nuuanu Y, and I will, yes WILL, start to use the cross-trainer, treadmill, and weight machines more diligently to help keep fit. (Watching the World Cup matches make for good inspiration.)
And don't forget to treat dad this Sunday. Mine passed on recently, and I will remember him fondly with some flowers placed at his wall niche in Punchbowl. He was a good guy at heart.

It promises to be a scorching summer. To cope with the heat, our family plans to head out to Ice Palace regularly. The Halawa skating rink offers fun all day and night through the summer break, and with a $7.50 admission that includes skates, it hardly pinches at the pocketbook.
Keep cool. Summer hours are: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, 7 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday evenings, 10:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. Call them at 487-9921.
