Last year: Michael Campbell won at Pinehurst No. 2, finishing at even par for a two-stroke victory over Tiger Woods. Campbell joined 1963 British Open champion Bob Charles as the only New Zealanders to win a major. Third-round leader Retief Goosen, the 2001 and 2004 winner, finished with an 81 to tie for 11th at 8 over.
Notes: Woods is making his first start since the Masters and his father's death. He won the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black for his seventh major victory in an 11-tournament span. The 10-time major champion also won in 2000 at Pebble Beach for the first of four straight major titles, winning by a major-record 15 strokes and finishing at 12-under 272 to become the first player in tournament history to complete 72 holes at double digits under par. He won USGA titles in six consecutive years, the U.S. Junior from 1991-93 and the U.S. Amateur from 1994-96. ... Phil Mickelson has won the last two majors, the PGA Championship at Baltusrol last August and his second Masters title in April at Augusta National. ... Bobby Jones won the third of his four U.S. Open titles in 1929 at Winged Foot. Billy Casper (1959), Hale Irwin (1974) and Fuzzy Zoeller (1984) also won the national championship on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed course. Davis Love III won the last major at Winged Foot, the 1997 PGA Championship. ... The 2007 tournament will be played at Oakmont in Pennsylvania.

Last week: Se Ri Pak won the LPGA Championship for the third time, hitting a hybrid 4-iron from 201 yards to 3 inches to set up a birdie on the first hole of a playoff with Karrie Webb at Bulle Rock. Pak had a three-putt bogey on the final hole of regulation, while Webb missed 4- and 10-foot birdie putts on her last two holes.
