The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 30 awards, including 11 for first place, at the 2005 Excellence in Journalism Awards held Saturday by the Society of Professional Journalists-Hawaii Chapter.
The Star-Bulletin took first place for government reporting for "Battle for the Akaka Bill." Judges described the story as "thorough reporting and a balanced look at all sides of a bill in Congress to give federal recognition to native Hawaiians."
The newspaper's photo department also took home three first-place awards for news photography, sports photography and photo essay.
The Honolulu Advertiser won 20 awards, 10 of them for first place, including the top award for public service reporting for "Are we ready? Disaster preparedness in Hawaii."
KITV won six first place awards in the TV news category.
Hawaii Public Radio swept first-place awards in the radio categories for general news/enterprise reporting and feature reporting.
Honolulu Magazine won four first-place awards in magazine categories, while Hawaii Business won two first-place awards.
Entries in all 46 categories were judged by the Society of Professional Journalists' Cincinnati and Greater Oregon chapters.
