Drivers suck up cheap gas in Kakaako
A promotion drops the price of unleaded below $3 per gallon
A sale on gasoline brought prices below $3 a gallon and clogged a main street in Kakaako yesterday.
Lex Brodie's on Queen Street dropped its prices to a level unseen for more than a month, according to General Manager Scott Williams.
Cars lined up along Queen Street and backed up past the South Street intersection at one point during the day. Williams said the longest wait he heard was about 15 minutes.
Customer Donna Botelho said the wait was "well worth it."
"It's so important to find the cheapest gas nowadays ... especially with gas prices soaring over $3 per gallon and with the way SUVs guzzle gas," she said.
The company also held its "Fast Gas Friday" promotion at its Waipahu gas station. Prices were $2.9999 for regular unleaded, $3.0999 for super unleaded and $3.1999 for premium.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge report, the average price of unleaded gas in Hawaii yesterday was $3.396 a gallon, and the last time the average was below $3 was in March.
Williams said both stations pumped more than double the normal volume. The Kakaako station ran out in midafternoon and almost exhausted a second shipment of gas, which arrived around 4 p.m. The Waipahu pumps ran dry at about 5:30 p.m.
