UH rises in WAC cup standings
Hawaii ties for fifth in the race for the Commissioner's Cup
Three league championships from its women's teams helped Hawaii to a fifth-place finish in the annual Western Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup standings.
UH won WAC titles in soccer, women's volleyball and swimming and diving during the 2005-06 athletic year and closed the season a total of 82.50 points, tied with conference newcomer Idaho in the standings announced yesterday.
The fifth-place showing is the school's highest finish since the Commissioner's Cup was instituted in 2002-03.
UH placed seventh last year with 66 points and saw improvement in nine sports this season, the biggest jumps coming in swimming and diving (increase of five points), men's tennis (4.5 points) and baseball (four points).
Boise State, which won or shared four conference titles, finished first.
The Broncos shared the football title with Nevada and won the men's tennis, men's indoor and men's outdoor track championships to tally 96.5 points.
Winners of the league's men's basketball title and co-champions in football, runner-up Nevada finished with 93.75 points for its best ever finish in the standings.
