Two-vehicle crash in Makakilo kills 1
Two others are hurt after the collision causes a truck to flip
A 42-year-old Waianae man who was a passenger in a pickup truck died yesterday and two others were seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle freeway accident in Makakilo.
The Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Darren Delos Santos of Waianae.
The pickup, a Chevrolet Colorado, clipped a flatbed truck which was heading westbound on the H-1 freeway about 12:47 p.m., emergency personnel said.*
The Chevy flipped over the concrete median, dropping onto the eastbound side of the freeway, police said.
Meanwhile, the driver of the flatbed truck veered left and struck the concrete median, throwing debris into the eastbound lanes, according to an Emergency Medical Services official.
Delos Santos was taken in extremely critical condition to St. Francis-West Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, an EMS official said.
The 26-year-old female driver of the Chevy was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
The flatbed truck driver, a 54-year-old man, was also taken to Queen's in serious but stable condition.
Police closed two lanes in both directions of the H-1 freeway, causing traffic to back up during afternoon rush hour traffic.
But police reopened two lanes about 5:45 p.m. All lanes were open by 8 p.m.
