State to help with electric bills
Applications are being accepted in June for one-time assistance to pay for electric bills of low-income households.
The state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will determine if a household qualifies based on incomes and assets.
To apply, the most recent original electric bill must be presented. For more information, call the program's offices at: Central, 488-6834; Kalihi/Palama, 847-0804; Leahi, 732-7755; Waianae, 696-4261; and Windward, 239-5754.

Car crash on Kauai kills 2 and injures 2
Two men died from injuries they sustained in a two-vehicle crash on the Kapaa bypass road on Kauai yesterday afternoon.
Police said the driver of an Acura sedan was heading north on the bypass road about a mile from the Kuhio Highway junction when he apparently crossed the center line and collided with a Honda van heading south about 4:30 p.m.
The sedan driver died at the scene, while his passenger was taken in critical condition to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
A woman driving the van was taken to Wilcox and was admitted for treatment, police said. A 2-year-old in the van was treated at Wilcox and released, police said. This brings Kauai's traffic fatalities for the year to eight.
Big Isle man arrested for shooting, threats
A 48-year-old Puna man remained in custody in the Hilo cellblock last night for a shooting in the Kalapana Blacksands subdivision Sunday.
A 43-year-old man told police that the suspect threw a large rock through a window at the victim's home Sunday evening and fled. The victim then went to the suspect's home and confronted him about the damage.
The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the victim. Later, the suspect returned to the victim's house and allegedly fired several shots from his gun, damaging the victim's vehicle. Police arrested the suspect at 5:40 a.m. Monday for investigation of criminal property damage, reckless endangering and terroristic threatening. Police recovered a firearm from the suspect's home.

Motorcyclist dies 1 day after accident
A 31-year-old Salt Lake man died Monday from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident early Sunday morning in Hawaii Kai.
The Medical Examiner's Office said Jesse Mori died of multiple blunt force injuries from the crash. Police said Mori was heading south on Keahole Street near Kalanianaole Highway, lost control of the motorcycle and hit a tree.
Mori was thrown from the 2002 Honda and landed on a grassy area next to the sidewalk, police said. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, but his condition worsened to critical. He died Monday.
Police said speed and alcohol were apparent factors in the accident. Mori was not wearing a helmet, police said. It was the 44th Oahu traffic fatality this year compared with 34 the same time last year.

Man charged in attack on pregnant girlfriend
A 43-year-old Nanakuli man was charged with second-degree attempted murder yesterday for allegedly running over his pregnant girlfriend, 26, with a large pickup truck.
Glen T. Meyers Sr. surrendered Monday to police after hiding at a Kauwahi Avenue home in Nanakuli. Doctors successfully delivered the 26-year-old woman's baby boy by Caesarean section Monday, according to sources close to the investigation. Sources also said the mother was apparently on drugs at the time of the attack. The woman's condition has stabilized, police said.

Second man sought in Waimalu beer heist
Police arrested one man and were looking for another man who allegedly was involved in a liquor robbery in Waimalu early yesterday.
The incident took place at 3:55 a.m. at the Times Supermarket at 91-1264 Kaahumanu St., police said. A store manager saw the men in the liquor isle and told them that liquor sales did not start until 6 a.m., police said. At that point one of the men allegedly grabbed two 12-packs of beer and began walking out of the store.
The manager tried to stop him and was allegedly punched in the face. The manager and other employees held the man until police arrived. Police arrested the man, 19, for investigation of second-degree robbery. The other suspect fled.
Teenage boys arrested in Kalihi robbery
Police arrested two juvenile teenagers who allegedly stole items from a Kalihi store after being denied in an attempt to buy beer.
Police said the owner of the store stopped the boys, ages 14 and 16, from buying beer on Sunday at about 7:45 p.m. As the boys were leaving the store, the older one grabbed three beanie caps from a display case next to the door while the other grabbed two bandanas from the case, police said.
An employee of the store chased after the older boy and caught him outside the store, police said. The boy then pulled out a knife and said "what, what" and pointed it at the employee, police said.
The employee then released the boy. Police later caught both boys and arrested the older one for investigation of first-degree robbery and the younger one for investigation of fourth-degree theft. Both boys were later released pending an investigation.
Witnesses see man kidnapped in Salt Lake
A 34-year-old man was kidnapped in Salt Lake early today, according to three witnesses, police said.
Two witnesses, a 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were talking to the man, who was sitting in a car outside the Salt Lake home of the third witness, a 33-year-old man, at about 12:25 a.m. police said. At that point another vehicle arrived and blocked the car the victim was in, police said.
The witnesses said four men, who appeared to be in their 20s, got out of the second car, demanded money from the victim and searched his car.
Two of the men then got into the victim's car, pushed him over to the passenger seat, and drove off, the witnesses said. The other two suspects drove off in their vehicle. Police did not release a description of the vehicles.
