Nakashima wins Public Links sectional
Wailuku's Kelly Nakashima needed six holes of a sudden-death playoff to win the Women's Amateur Public Links Sectional Qualifier yesterday at the Kapalua Bay course on Maui.
Nakashima tied after the regulation 18 holes with two others at 3-over 75 -- Kapalua's Lori Planos and Wailuku's Kyung Kim.
Kim fell on the first playoff hole with a bogey. Nakashima finally defeated Planos on the sixth playoff hole.
Nakashima advanced to the national public links championship at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo., June 20-25.
Lambert, Metzger lose in semifinals
Punahou alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger lost to Brent Doble and Ryan Mariano in the semifinals of the AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Huntington Beach (Calif.) Open yesterday.
Lambert and Metzger won the first game, but lost the next two in the three-game match -- 14-21, 21-17, 22-20.
Doble and Mariano ended up losing to Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in the final.
On the women's side, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won their fourth consecutive title this season.
Silverswords soccer tryouts coming up
Chaminade will hold soccer tryouts for the men's and women's programs Saturday at the St. Louis soccer field.
Men's tryouts are 9 to 10 a.m. and women's tryouts are 10 to 11:30 a.m.
