Israeli consul general to discuss challenges
Temple Emanu-El will host a public appearance by Ehud Danoch, consul general of Israel, Tuesday at the synagogue at 2550 Pali Highway.
Danoch will speak on "Current Challenges in Israel: A Candid Assessment."
He has been stationed in Los Angeles since 2004. He formerly served as chief of staff to Israel Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom where he was involved in discussions on proposals for peace and coexistence with a proposed Palestinian state, and on the security fence being built by Israel along its border with Gaza and the West Bank.
The 7 p.m. program is open to the public and is an "opportunity to engage in a candid conversation ... on a variety of issues of interest or concern to those who care about Israel and the Middle East," according to an announcement.
Organist to perform classical repertoire
Nationally acclaimed organist Paul Jacobs will perform the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other classical composers in a June 9 concert at St. Andrew's Cathedral.
Jacobs, 29, is chairman of the organ department at the Juilliard School in New York. He has performed in concerts in North and South America, Europe and Australia. His first recording of Bach compositions was released in 2004. He was awarded the Yale School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award and the Harvard Musical Association's Arthur W. Foote award.
Jacobs will also perform compositions by Brahms, Ives, Handel and Durufle in the 7:30 p.m. concert co-sponsored by the American Guild of Organists, Hawaii chapter, and the cathedral.
There is no admission charge but donations will be accepted.
