Conferences across state offer information for caregivers

Registration forms for the events on June 10 to 16 may be obtained online

The AARP Hawaii is accepting registration for a series of conferences, entitled "Caring for Family, Caring for Yourself," to help caregivers. The conferences will be held June 10-16 on all islands.

The conferences for family and professional caregivers will begin in Honolulu on June 10, followed by events on June 13 on Kauai, June 14 in Hilo, June 15 on Maui and June 16 in Honolulu.

Hawaii Medical Service Association is the title sponsor, supported by the AARP, the City and County of Honolulu or the county Elderly Affairs Divisions of each island, and Alu Like Inc. The cost is $30; lunch is included for those who pre-register by June 5.

Location: Hawai'i Convention Center

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Keynote speaker: Clarence Liu, who will address "A Call to Care: Finding Inspiration and Strength from Within"

Workshops and self-care activities on topics ranging from coping with Alzheimer's disease and exploring the legal issues of caregiving, to avoiding frauds and scams that target seniors.

» June 13 -- Kauai

Location: Aloha Beach Resort

Time: 9:30 to noon

Keynote speakers: Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative, and Nancy Fox, executive director of Eden, will focus on presenting caregivers with a philosophy on caregiving.

They will offer tools for improving the quality of life for caregivers and their recipients and explore new perspectives on care. The Eden Alternative is a research, consulting and advocacy nonprofit group committed to improving the care of people living in institutions.
