Benefit at Roy's
Roy Yamaguchi's Kihei restaurant celebrates its fifth anniversary with a benefit dinner on May 26 for Maui's Hawaiian language-immersion preschool, Punana Leo o Maui.
Joining Yamaguchi in preparing a five-course dinner are Roy's corporate chef Jackie Lau, D.K. Kodama of the Sansei Seafood & Sushi Bar restaurants, Hiroshi Fukui of Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas, and Alex Strada of Alex in the Wynn Hotel, Las Vegas.
Entertainment will be by Uluwehi Guerrero and his halau.
Dinner seating is at 6 p.m. Cost is $100, including pupu and cocktails on the lanai and wines with dinner. Call 808-891-1120.
A spirited evening
Dale DeGroff, director of Beverage Arts at Halekulani and a James Beard nominee, returns to the Waikiki hotel Tuesday to host another seminar in his cocktail series, this time with a Kentucky Derby theme.
For $60, learn the secrets behind the Kentucky Derby Mint Julep (and taste your fair share as well).
Then on Thursday he'll teach how to make a summer favorite in a class called "Viva Espana-Sangrias" ($50). You'll prepare your own drinks at a workstation equipped with fresh ingredients, and sample variations on the featured spirits.
To keep you on your feet, Halekulani hors d'oeuvres will be served throughout the evening.
Classes start at 6:30 p.m. in the Halekulani Garden Terrace. Call 931-5040. Reservations required.
Key to the grill
Also at the Halekulani, House Without a Key has introduced a sunset Kiawe Grill on Tuesdays.
From 5 to 8:30 p.m., grilled seafood and premium cuts of meat, along with plenty of veggies and fruit, will complement the outdoor setting, Hawaiian music and mai tais. Call 923-2311 or visit www.halekulani.com.
