Moanalua beats Maui after trailing by 14
Menehunes face OIA champ Roosevelt in a quarterfinal today
The Moanalua Menehunes don't wilt against tall teams.
The Menehunes simply play from the heart, as they did when rallying from a 14-point deficit to oust Maui 41-37 yesterday in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Britni Ronolo, Jamie Ronolo and Jade Miller combined for 35 points as Moanalua advanced to today's quarterfinal against Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Roosevelt at 2:30 p.m. The Rough Riders posted two close wins in OIA play against the Menehunes.
"They'll be tough. They push the ball a lot, too," said Britni Ronolo, a sophomore forward who finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Jamie Ronolo tallied 12 points, including two of her team's four 3-pointers, and Miller had 11 points and a game-high six steals to neutralize Maui's twin towers of Hotia Vaaimamao (5-foot-11) and Annika Howland (6-1).

Maui appeared to be in complete command after taking leads of 16-4 after the first quarter and 22-8 midway through the second. But Moanalua began to hit against the Sabers' zone while bothering Maui with a tenacious man-to-man defense to cut the deficit to 24-14 on Terina Blue's 3-pointer from the left corner with 4 seconds to go before half.
Moanalua unleashed its full-court press in the third quarter, and the Sabers began to unravel, committing 12 turnovers in 8 minutes.
"In the second half, they did what we asked, and when they do that comes intensity," Moanalua coach Rick Gonsalves said.
Britni Ronolo's drive to the basket from the left corner gave the Menehunes their first lead, 30-29, with 49 seconds to go in the third quarter. Miller lost the ball, hustled back for a steal, then turned upcourt and hit a 41-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Moanalua a 33-29 lead.
Maui, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, stabilized against Moanalua's full-court pressure and pulled to within 40-37 after Crystal Silva's free throw with 2:20 left to play. That turned out to be the Sabers' final point.
"It's a tough loss. We didn't take care of the ball," Maui coach Gilbert Silva said.

A little extra inspiration never hurt, especially for the Lady Raiders. With older sister and former Star-Bulletin All-State center Latoya Wily -- now with Alcorn State -- looking on, Artevia Wily scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished four assists to lead Kahuku past the Trojans.
Wily also had four of her team's 12 steals. Fellow senior Camilla Ah-Hoy had a team-high 16 points, seven boards and three steals as Kahuku advanced to the quarterfinals.
"We had the jitters, but Tavy is more ready than ever," coach Val Anae said. "Milla is playing with major shin splints, but she does so much for us."
Kahuku, the OIA third-place team, will battle top-seeded Punahou today at 6 p.m.
Kahuku lost to Punahou by two points in overtime during a nonconference game.
Kelsey Woodward led Mililani with 12 points.
