Shibata named to All-Northwest team
Jordan Shibata (Aiea '04), a shortstop for Lewis & Clark College, has been named to the All-Northwest Conference second team. The sophomore hit .354 in 39 games for the Pioneers. He led the team in runs (40), doubles (nine) and stolen bases (11-for-14).
Shibata also had two triples and two homers for 76 total bases and a team-leading .551 slugging percentage.
Teammate and right-handed pitcher Eric Muraoka (Iolani '04) was 1-3 with a 9.64 earned-run average in 15 appearances.
Grant Yamaguchi (Mid-Pacific '03) was an All-NWC honorable-mention pick. The junior outfielder for Willamette hit .300 with 11 doubles, a triple and five home runs, second best on the team, in 35 games.
Teammate Kelsey Nakata (Mililani '05), a freshman right-hander, had a 3-0 record with a 2.81 ERA in 12 games for the Bearcats.
» Matt Morgado (Kamehameha), a sophomore catcher at Whittier College, has been named to the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team. Morgado is tied for second for the Poets with a .371 batting average in 33 games. He led Whittier in on-base percentage (.468) and was third in slugging percentage (.491).
Senior second baseman Jason Teruya (Iolani) played in just 10 games and hit .313.
» Kip Masuda (Mid-Pacific '05) has played in 20 games for the 26-20-1 Long Beach State 49ers. The freshman catcher is hitting .313. He has three doubles, one homer and 10 RBIs.
Kasey Ko is hitting .276 in 38 games for the 24-25 Brigham Young Cougars. The freshman first baseman from Punahou has six doubles, one triple and two home runs.
» Guy McDowell (Saint Louis '02) was 5-5 in 17 games (15 starts) for the Azusa Pacific Cougars. The senior right-hander finished with a 3.86 ERA. He tied for the team victory lead. McDowell walked 17 and fanned 55 in 67 2/3 innings for the 24-25 Cougars.
» Shaun Kiriu (Punahou '04), the starting shortstop for the 18-20 Puget Sound Loggers, played all 38 games and hit .274 this spring, fifth- best average among the starters. He was second in runs with 27. Kiriu walked 22 times and struck out only 21 times.
» Mark Nishimura (Hilo) was hitting .299 for the California Lutheran Kingsmen when he was sidelined by a torn hamstring four weeks ago. The senior third baseman had three doubles and 12 RBIs.
» Kirby Yates (Kauai '05) will have Tommy John surgery May 26 in Los Angeles performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the California Angels medical director. The freshman right-hander at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., pitched just two-thirds of an inning before the injury.
» Tyler McCready (Iolani), a right-hander, is not pitching for the Pacific Tigers this season.
"Tyler is in school but took the year off from baseball to work," said Glenn Sisk, assistant director of media relations. "He has a year of eligibility left and the option to return to the team next year."
All-WAC golf honors for Kauai's Watabu
Casey Watabu (Kauai '01), a fifth-year senior at Nevada, has been named to the All-Western Athletic Conference men's golf second team. He averaged 72.2 strokes per round for 33 rounds for the Wolf Pack this year.
Watabu had one top-10 finish and six top-20 finishes. In last week's WAC tournament at Boise, Idaho, he tied for sixth place with a 72-74--146.
