Same show, New Channel
The University of Hawaii awarded KGMB (Ch. 9) the rights to "The June Jones Television Show" for 2006, athletic director Herman Frazier announced yesterday.
A kickoff special previewing the Sept. 2 season opener will air Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
The weekly show, which last year was on KHON (Ch. 2), will air Sundays at 10:30 p.m., starting Sept. 3, and will be rebroadcast on Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
The show will be hosted by Liz Chun.
Rainbow Wahine win 2 at WAC tournament
Justine Smethurst struck out 11 and pitched a five-inning, mercy-rule perfect game yesterday as Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech 8-0 in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament in Fresno, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine (29-20) followed up by beating San Jose State 3-1 in the third game of the tournament.
Courtney Baughman got the pitching win with two innings of relief as UH scored all three of its runs in the top of the seventh.
» San Francisco State beat Hawaii-Hilo 3-2 in the first game of the NCAA Division II West Regional at Bakersfield, Calif.
The score was tied at 2-all after seven innings, and the Gators won it in the bottom of the ninth.
» Humboldt State defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-2 at the West Regional in Bakersfield.
Seasiders advance to national semifinals
No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawaii topped No. 6 Abilene Christian 5-0 yesterday at Kansas City, Mo., to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II tournament.
All six Seasiders singles winners -- Jing Jing Liu, Julia Ustyuzhanina, Ramona Husaru, Tetyana Bula, Petra Teller and Gurianna Korinihona -- also won in doubles.
Patacchia, Irons in Billabong Pro quarterfinals
Hawaii's Fred Patacchia Jr. and Bruce Irons surfed into the Billabong Pro Tahiti surf contest yesterday in 4-6 foot waves at Teahupoo.
In the fourth round, Patacchia beat Damien Hobgood, and Irons beat Tim Reyes to move on. Hawaii's Danny Fuller and three-time world champ Andy Irons lost their fourth-round heats.
