Brothers Cazimero
‘May Day 2006’
HAPPY 29TH: Robert and Roland Cazimero relaxed backstage during the 29th Annual Brothers Cazimero May Day concert at the Waikiki Shell on May 1. The Brothers' first May Day concert in 1977 was intended to revive the Territorial Era tradition that "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii."
READY TO ROCK: Vergil Jepas checked his bass before playing Brother Noland's set. Jepas' reflectorized bass strap got a lot of attention backstage.
SHALL WE DANCE?: Keao Costa talked story with Mountain Apple Co. President Leah Bernstein as the Cazimeros' May Day celebration continued with a party backstage after the show.
PARTY TIME: Justine Kamelamela, center, enjoyed the after-show party with Mahie Murakami, left, and Lisa Soong.
MEET THE PRODUCER: Jon de Mello was out by the concert sound board when he was greeted by "Princess" Tammy Welteke after the show. De Mello has been the producer of all the Cazimero May Day concerts, and although this one seemed a bit subdued, the production values were as high as ever.
NOL CHECKS IT OUT: Brother Noland, left, this year's celebrity guest artist, watched the first half of the show out front with Mike Ka'awa. Nol came on after intermission and opened the second half of the show with a new arrangement of his mid-'80s hit, "Are You Native?"
FOREVER 'ALA: The Cazimeros' honorary "third brother," kumu hula Leina'ala Kalama Heine, was -- as always -- an important part of the show.
HERE'S TO A CAZIMERO MAY DAY!: Mark Bernstein toasted the artistic and commercial success of the two-hour concert.
2007 STARTS HERE: Jon de Mello, right, joined Robert and Roland Cazimero at the after-show party backstage. The three had good reason to celebrate. "May Day XXIX" was a beautiful showcase of modern Hawaiian music and hula, enhanced by de Mello's staging and production. Next year will be "May Day XXX," and de Mello is probably already drafting plans for it.
