Kalaheo does enough
Though No. 8 Kalaheo was forced to play at its opponent's speed, the Mustangs were able to make the critical shots down the stretch to secure their spot in the OIA Championship game with a 37-23 win over Radford.
"Twenty-three points defensively, I think any coach would be happy," Mustang coach Chico Furtado said. "Especially when you're struggling offensively."
Despite an off night (just one field goal), Shanadee Canon led the Mustangs with 10 points, while Delicia Wilson added nine.
"I think we performed great because Shan was struggling a little today, so others had to step up," Kalaheo forward Kaliko Kepa said. "We just showed everybody that we don't need to depend on Shan, that everybody can contribute. When we see her struggling, we can pull through for her."
With a slim three-point lead heading into the final quarter at Mililani, the Mustangs (11-3) pulled away by hitting nine of their first 10 free-throw attempts of the period.
"When you get in that situation where you're behind against them, because they're so fundamentally sound and so well-coached, they're going to make every free throw like they did toward the end. They're going to take care of the ball," Radford coach David Lane said.
Kepa, who finished with eight points, scored six in the final quarter, including four from the free-throw line.
"Last game I went 4-for-11, so Coach kind of ragged on me in practice, so I just worked on it all week. And then, I guess 100 percent today," Kepa said with a smile.
With the win, the Mustangs, the third seed out of the East, advanced into tomorrow's OIA Championship against Roosevelt. The Rough Riders defeated Kahuku in the night's second semifinal.
The Rams (12-2) will play the Red Raiders in the third-place game.
Both teams came out tight. Kalaheo missed all nine of their shots from the field, collecting all of their points from the free-throw line. Canon went 8-for-9 on her free throws, and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the first quarter.
"We didn't want to get into a running game with them," Lane said. "They have real good shooters. We wanted to keep the pace a little slower because our offense is more of a half-court offense. I thought they did a good job."

Iwalani Rodrigues scored a team-high 13 points as the Rough Riders held on to defeat the Red Raiders.
Though the Rough Riders led by more than five points for most of the first three quarters, the Red Raiders came storming back. Kahuku closed the gap to just three points on a 3-pointer by Artevia Wily with just 3 minutes to go in the third.
From then on, the game remained tight and eventually the Rough Rider lead, which had been at 11 coming out of halftime, was gone when Wily hit a layup at the 6:10 mark in the fourth to tie the game at 39.
But Roosevelt continued to dominate under the glass, getting consistent production from Rodrigues and Shannon Miyashiro as the Rough Riders pulled away.
Miyashiro finished with 12 points, while sophomore Tiana Sugui added 10.
