Taller Knights knock out Bulldogs
Castle made sure its last three quarters would be more memorable than its sluggish first.
The Knights looked stagnant after one period, in which Waialua outscored them 10-3, but pulled together for a convincing 48-37 win to knock out the Bulldogs in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association White basketball tournament yesterday at Kalani High School.
In the second quarter, Castle, the third seed in the White East, got back to doing what it does best: pushing the tempo and pounding the ball inside. Forwards Ui Kekauoha and Shanyn Fafard-Kaaihue scored 15 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the way for the Knights. Many of their baskets came on second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds due to a height advantage in the paint.
"I just got lucky on my rebounds," Kekauoha said. "I do (practice), but they were pushing hard, too. They have good defense; I felt I just got lucky, I could have played harder."
Waialua, the second seed in the White West, was unaffected by Castle's full-court press for the opening quarter. But the Bulldogs started to cough up the ball early in the second period and the Knights went on a 15-1 run to retake the lead for the rest of the game.
Castle coach Jeff McKeown attributed his team's slow start to a 10-day layoff since the last game of the OIA regular season.
"I thought we came out and played really sloppy," he said. "The second quarter was a big quarter for us -- that was a quarter where if we didn't make a run, we were probably in big trouble and our defense stepped up at that point."
Castle outscored Waialua 17-6 in the period.
On several possessions in the second half, the taller Kekauoha, Fafard-Kaaihue and Sarah Phromisiri batted the ball around to themselves multiple times under the basket and over the heads of the smaller Bulldog players until somebody got a putback.
"We kind of knew that they were going to be big, so I stuck it in their heads that they had to box out," said Waialua coach Michele Sales. "But you know, you can only (do so) much, and if they do it they do it, and if not, then ... " she said with a resigned shrug.
Waialua trailed by four at halftime and by nine after three quarters, and could get no closer than seven points in the final period. When the Bulldogs' deficit grew to double digits in the second half, they tried to hurry up their offense, which played into Castle's hands and led to more turnovers and errant shot attempts.
Kimberly Meyerowitz led the Bulldogs with 13 points.
"We played hard, but made a lot of turnovers and should've kept our head in the game," Meyerowitz said. "We get impatient at times."
Castle plays Kalani today at 7 p.m. in the semifinals. The Knights won't have such an easy time exploiting height deficiency in the Falcons, though.
"We just have to post harder," Kekauoha said. "We have a height advantage on any team in Division II, so if we play our game we got it."
