Nakashima to take over for Wilson as Pac-Five's track and field coach
Al Wilson will hand the Pac-Five baton to Rick Nakashimaafter Saturday's Island Movers/ HHSAA State Track and Field Championships.
Nakashima replaces Wilson as the Wolfpack head coach for both boys and girls. Wilson will remain as an assistant handling the distance runners.
"I just think it's time," Wilson, 46, said. "As a head coach there's so much to focus on. As a head coach you're just in charge, as an assistant you get a chance to actually coach the kids."
With star runnerLauren Ho leading the way, Pac-Five took second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last year. Ho, a multiple state champion in track and cross country, is out this season with a leg injury and will not compete this week.
Wilson coached the conglomerate Pac-Five teams for seven years. This year's teams have representatives from eight ILH schools. They practice at Kaimuki and Punahou.
"It's always a challenge because we're splintered," Wilson said. "But I'm sure Rick will be up to it. He is a very knowledgeable and respected guy."
This is the first head-coaching position for Nakashima, 46, whose area of expertise is the jumps. As an assistant, he coached three state champions at Kaiser (1979-81), includingRhani Peters, who won the long, triple and high jumps. He also assisted with the University of Hawaii women's team (1981-84) when All-AmericanGwen Loud competed for the Wahine, and at Punahou (2001-2005).
"I'm very excited about this opportunity," said the new Wolfpack head coach, whose daughter,Tia Nakashima, is a sprinter at Hawaii Baptist entering ninth grade in the fall. "I've always pushed the idea of letting the individuals do the things they're good at and the team points will come. Don't wear a kid down just to get points."
One or the other
Tiara Doleis a standout athlete by any standard, so much so that she is invaluable to both the track and basketball teams at St. Anthony.
Last year's champion in the long jump had to choose between track and basketball this season, at least for the postseason. The state meet begins Friday at Mililani, where Dole has a chance to defend her title and compete in the high jump, which she placed second in last season.
However, the Maui Interscholastic League Division II basketball playoffs will also be played on Friday. The Lady Trojans haven't qualified for Friday's D-II finals yet, but if they do, they'll be without Dole. St. Anthony will face the Kaahumanu Hou-Molokai winner tomorrow.
If they win with Dole, they'll play for a state-tourney berth the following night.
