Hawaii finishes No. 4 in volleyball poll
Hawaii didn't make it to the volleyball final four, but finished No. 4 in the last CSTV/AVCA coaches poll released yesterday.
The Warriors (23-5) finished with 188 points, well behind national champion and top-ranked UCLA (26-12), which earned 240 points and all 16 first-place votes.
UC Irvine (27-5, 132 points) and Long Beach State (23-10, 200 points) finished at No. 2 and No. 3.
NCAA tournament runner-up Penn State ended at No. 5.
Irons, Fuller surf into third round in Tahiti
Hawaii's Bruce Irons and Danny Fuller won their first-round heats yesterday to advance all the way into the third round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti surf contest.
Four other Hawaii surfers didn't fare quite as well in the first round of the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event at Teahupoo. Three -- three-time world champion Andy Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Roy Powers -- all placed third in their heats in the clean 4-6 foot surf, but still advanced to the second round.
Another Hawaii surfer, Fred Patacchia Jr., also moved into the second round after placing second in his first-round heat yesterday.
Seasiders capture Division II tennis honors
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Ramona Husaru earned NCAA Division II West Region tennis rookie of the year honors at the national tournament's kickoff banquet last night in Kansas City, Mo.
In addition, Tetyana Bula was honored as the region's senior player of the year. Husaru is undefeated in both singles and doubles. Bula is highly ranked for the 23-0 team.
The Seasiders men's team (15-3) also nabbed honors. Dillon Porter received the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award for sportsmanship and leadership. Jakub Huza was picked as the region's player to watch and Leon So'onalole won the region's senior player of the year award.
Libadisos earns baseball honors for Highland
Aiea graduate Dylan Libadisos has been named the most valuable player in the Eastern Division of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
The outfielder for Highland (Kan.) Community College also was named to the All-Conference first team by a vote of opposing coaches.
Libadisos hit .385 with 12 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. He has signed a letter of intent to play for NCAA Division I Northwestern State in Louisiana next year.
Pape makes Division II All-Freshman team
Colorado School of Mines freshman guard Kyle Pape was named to the Division II All-Freshman team.
The 6-foot-2 Pape, an Iolani graduate who was the Star-Bulletin's player of the year as a high school senior, also earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference freshman of the year honors and honorable-mention All-RMAC East Division honors.
He averaged a team-best 14.2 points per game.
