Pacific commander visits China
BEIJING » The commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific arrived in China yesterday for a visit aimed at rebuilding contacts between the two countries' armed forces. U.S. Adm. William Fallon, who is based at Camp H.M. Smith, was to meet with top Chinese defense and Foreign Ministry officials today in Beijing before touring military installations in other parts of the country. Fallon has repeatedly called for a full restoration of contacts between the U.S. and Chinese militaries.

Woman is charged in elaborate robbery plot
Authorities charged a 40-year-old homeless woman who allegedly used a scheme to rob an 18-year-old woman at a Kapolei restaurant.
Cynthia A. Williams was charged yesterday with first-degree robbery and bail was set at $25,000.
Police said Williams approached the victim with a 1-year-old daughter at a bus stop in Kapolei, and allegedly asked if she could photograph her daughter for a church-sponsored contest.
Williams allegedly told the victim she needed a photo of a child washing her hands, and offered the woman $50.
The woman followed Williams into the women's restroom at the Kapolei KFC restaurant, locked the door, then took photos of the child. Williams allegedly then asked if she could photograph the woman.
Williams then allegedly took out something from her bag, pressed it against the woman's neck and said it was a gun and threatened to shoot if she moved, police said.
Police said Williams took items from the woman and fled on foot.

Police capture suspect in 2 bank robberies
Police yesterday captured a 37-year-old suspected bank robber who allegedly robbed several tellers at knifepoint two different times at the same Waikiki bank.
The suspect faces federal bank robbery charges for two robberies at the Hobron Lane branch of First Hawaiian Bank on March 30 and April 25.
The man allegedly entered the bank brandishing a knife and robbed four tellers on March 30, police said.
On April 25, the same man entered the same bank and robbed several tellers at knifepoint, police said.
After a police investigation, the man was identified and arrested yesterday.

Man who used knife on victim is sought
Police are looking for a 30-year-old man who was armed with a knife when he allegedly robbed another man in Kalihi on Monday.
The victim, 46, told police that the suspect asked him for money about 4 p.m., grabbed him by the throat then cut him with a sharp object.
The victim gave money the suspect, who then fled on foot, police said. The case is being investigated as a robbery and assault.
Motorist arrested for using truck as weapon
Police arrested a 41-year-old man who allegedly injured another man with his truck along Salt Lake Boulevard a week ago.
Police said that at around 3 p.m. last Tuesday the suspect, 35, reversed into the victimís knee, then tried to reverse into him a second time. The victim jumped onto the rear bumper of the pickup to avoid getting hit again, police said.
The suspect allegedly then drove forward over a sidewalk, causing the victim to fall into the back of the truck.
The victim jumped off the truck as the suspect was turning around in a cul-de-sac, police said. The victim suffered bruises to his knee and several fractured ribs. The suspect turned himself into police yesterday and was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault and kidnapping.
