Former Seasider Gaspar recognized nationally

The NCAA named former Brigham Young-Hawaii player Petra Gaspar the Division II Tennis Most Outstanding Student-Athlete for her accomplishments in championship competition.

The honor was bestowed as part of the NCAA's 25th Anniversary of Women's Championships celebration.

Gaspar led the Seasiders to three NCAA Division II titles -- in 1999, 2000 and 2002 -- and a runner-up finish in 2001.

Gaspar, a 2002 BYUH graduate, also finished the 1999 and 2000 seasons ranked first in both singles and doubles.

Hayashi hangs on to win Hall of Fame title

Kevin Hayashi shot a 2-over 75 yesterday and held on to win the 16th annual Hawaiian Telcom Hall of Fame Championship golf tournament at Kapalua, Maui.

Hayashi beat the hard-charging Brian Sasada, who fired a 3-under 70, and lost by one shot.

Hayashi finished with a 3-over 149 total. Sasada needed to make up a lot of ground after the opening round, when he shot 7-over 80.

Milne Dugal won the Senior Division at 2-over 148 after a 2-over 75 yesterday. Ron Kiaaina Jr. was three strokes behind in second place.

Ron Castillo Sr. went 91-81--172 to capture the Super Senior Division.

» Hawaii golfer Dale Gammie won the Rainbow Wahine's most valuable player award at the team's awards banquet.

Gammie was an All-WAC golfer and led the team in six of eight tournaments.

Sea Warriors, Vulcans make softball regional

Hawaii-Hilo and Hawaii Pacific received bids to the NCAA Division II West Regional Softball Championship in Bakersfield, Calif., yesterday.

In Thursday's openers, the sixth-seeded Vulcans (29-17) play third-seeded San Francisco State, and the eighth-seeded Sea Warriors (27-18) meet top-seeded Humboldt State.

The double-elimination tournament continues through Sunday, or Monday if the remaining teams have one loss.

UH's Smethurst is WAC's pitcher of week

Hawaii's Justine Smethurst was named the Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the week yesterday.

A freshman, Smethurst pitched her second solo perfect game of the season with a 6-0 win over Utah State last week. Her earlier perfect game came against Longwood on March 16.

Kennelly surfs into quarters at Teahupoo

Hawaii's Keala Kennelly advanced to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo surf contest yesterday in Tahiti.

In 2-3 foot surf, Kennelly placed second in her first-round heat and beat Samantha Cornish of Australia in her second-round heat.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard won her second-round heat, but was eliminated in the third round. Another Hawaii surfer, Megan Abubo, also lost in the third round.
