WARNING SIGNS
Keep hold of those balloons
Shiny metallic balloons are a favorite of graduation season, but Hawaiian Electric Co. warns that loose balloons could become tangled in power lines, causing short circuits -- and power failures.
HECO says helium-filled metallic balloons accounted for 22 power interruptions in 2005, more than twice the number of the previous year.
Attach a weight to every balloon, don't tie balloons together and don't attach metallic ribbons, which could get tangled in power lines. Never release balloons into the sky. And if one gets caught in a power line, do not try to retrieve it. Call 548-7961 to report it.
Deflate balloons and dispose of them safely. For more tips, call 543-7511 or visit the Web site www.heco.com.
