Cabreros’ record helps Punahou to title
Sure, the wind was at Samantha Cabreros' back. But that didn't really make up for the wet runway she had to negotiate last night. At any rate, it was not the ideal conditions for a triple jump, or any jump, or pretty much any track-and-field event.
But the Punahou junior didn't seem to care. She let loose with a 38-foot, 8 1/2-inch triple jump, breaking the Interscholastic League of Honolulu record of 38-134 set by Pac-Five's Maureen Dunn in 1988.
"I kind of had to get my mind focused and psyched up for it," said Cabreros, who had Dunn as an instructor in a summer sports program a few years ago. "It was really cold and windy and rainy, so it was hard to judge (where to take off)."
Cabreros -- who also won the long jump and came in second to teammate Kim Culver in the 200 meters -- helped lead the Buffanblu to their fourth consecutive ILH championship.
With Culver also winning the 400 and running legs in both winning relays, the Buffanblu girls scored 166 points. Host Kamehameha was second with 120.
"We got a great all-around effort, but next week it's not going to be easy," Punahou girls coach Duncan Macdonald said. "Baldwin's going to be really tough."
The Warrior boys also captured their fourth straight league title, with senior sprinter Kinohi Warrington leading the way. Warrington won the 100 and 400 and helped Kamehameha to a win in the 4x400.
The Warriors scored 169, with Punahou second at 126 1/2.
Like Culver, Warrington won the 400 handily. His time was 49.45.
"I try to blast it, blast and hold. That's the way I've done it since freshman year and it seems to work for me," Warrington said.
Warrington is finally living up to his talent, coach Sam Moku said.
"He's worked hard to get where he's at. Since ninth grade he's had the potential, but he had a hip-flexor injury last year, and then kind of a junior-itis thing where he wanted to experience other aspects of life. But he came back and stuck it out this year."

Damien's boys took an early lead as the Monarchs continued their outstanding showing in the field events they started in the trials.
Sione Tau passed teammate Lolomana Mikaele with a 168-6 discus throw, and they are 1-2 going into next week's state meet, also at Kamehameha.
Monarchs long jumper Kealoha Pilares also enjoyed a tailwind, winning in 21-1034, and the breeze in the late afternoon made for a promising field day for the jumpers.
Until the rain.
Pilares couldn't improve on the 46-1 triple jump he broke off in the trials, and Ronnie Jones' record of 46-3 stands. But Pilares still walked away with double gold, and a third in the 100 meters. Damien was third with 82 1/2 points despite a dearth of runners.
Word of Life senior Careena Onosai also doubled. She successfully defended her title in the discus throwing 135-5, but came 2 feet short of breaking the meet record she set last year. She also won the shot put.
Kamehameha's Alana Meditz swept the hurdles, with her hand-held time of 46.7 in the 300 meters nearly matching the 46.69 meet record set in 1999 by Sara Yap.
Punahou's Peter Deptula won the 1,500 meters (4:09.3) and 800 meters (2:01.51), while Kamehameha's Jeremy Kamaka'ala successfully defended his title in the 3,000 meters (9:25.97) despite a lingering virus.
Timing malfunctions occurred in the girls 1,500 meters and 4x100 relays, so there were no official times for either event. Scoring was not affected, as the races were not close. Coaches and officials said the lost times might have a minor effect on seedings for next week's state meet, but nothing causing a major controversy.
Punahou's Michael Yee scored perhaps the most inspirational individual win. He was top-seeded in the 300 hurdles, but fell down in his trials heat on Wednesday. He got up, scrambled to the finish and qualified in the eighth and final spot. Running from the outside lane yesterday, he managed to win in 40.83.
"I've been running hurdles since seventh grade and never fell down before," Yee said. "I didn't think I could win from the outside like that, playing rabbit."
