AWARD WINNER
Rotary to honor historian
Esther "Kiki" Takakura Mookini has been won many honors, from a Po'okela Award for publishing person of the year in 2004 to the Pa'a Mo'olelo award for her lifetime contributions to Hawaii's written history.
On May 12 the West Honolulu Rotary Club celebrates its 55th anniversary and honors her once again. Mookini will receive the Mary Kawena Pukui Award, which recognizes those who raise awareness about Hawaiian culture and heritage.
Mookini taught Hawaiian language and history at Kapiolani Community College. Although retired, she is now helping with the translation of the 1865 Kohala Circuit Court Minutebook for the Judiciary History Center.
