Call VA or visit Web site for volunteer opportunities

Question: Is it possible to volunteer at the VA and if so, how do I go about applying?

Answer: VA's Voluntary Service is the largest volunteer program in the federal government. Call the VA Medical Center at 433-0109 and ask for Pat Wieland. For further information, visit our Web site www.va.gov/volunteer. Over the past 58 years, VA volunteers have donated more than 663.5 million hours of service, estimated at $11.4 billion.

Q: How do I access my primary care provider between visits?

A: If you are experiencing an urgent health-care issue that is not an emergency, or need health advice that cannot wait for your next scheduled appointment, you are encouraged to contact your primary care provider. You also can call VA's telephone advice nurse program at 433-0852. Staff can access electronic medical records and consult with your primary care provider to resolve your urgent issues.

If you have questions about your benefits as a veteran, call Fred Ballard at the Veterans Affairs at 433-0049 or visit the VA Web site at www.va.gov/hawaii or the Star-Bulletin at 529-4747.
