HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Late run carries Kahuku
The Kahuku girls basketball team defeated Kaiser by a seemingly comfortable margin last night. But a pesky Cougars squad wouldn't let the No. 6 Red Raiders breathe easy until the game's final moments.
The Red Raiders saw a 12-point third-quarter lead dwindle to two in the final period of last night's Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East game at McKinley. But Kahuku closed the game with a 16-1 run to thwart Kaiser's upset hopes in a 60-43 victory.
Kahuku's Artevia Wily drained four 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 20 points and the Red Raiders avenged a 53-49 loss to Kaiser at home on April 4.
"They're scrappy, they stay in it," Kahuku coach Val Anae said of the Cougars. "They hang in there and hang in there and I give them credit. They kept going to the hole on us and we couldn't really shut off the drive."
Kahuku closed the regular season at 8-4, while Kaiser dropped to 4-8, and both teams will now turn their attention to the upcoming OIA playoffs.
Camilla Ah-Hoy complemented Wily's shooting with 14 points for Kahuku and Anae credited her with doing a lot of the little things that helped the Red Raiders hold off the Cougars.
"She rebounds, she steals the ball, sets up the assists. She's our bread and butter and has really played well," Anae said. "She does the things that don't get a lot of credit."
The closing stretch of last night's game was a reversal from the first meeting, when Kaiser hit the crucial shots to pull out the win. After closing to 44-42 with 5 minutes left, the Cougars went without a field goal the rest of the way, and Kahuku took command.
Kaiser center Sharde Pratt accounted for nearly half of the Cougars' output with a game-high 21 points. Guard Keely Bitanga had seven of her 11 points in the second half to spark the Cougars rally.
"(Pratt) basically did the same thing in (the first game) as she did tonight," Anae said. "We put three different girls on her tonight and she still went to the hole. So I give her all the credit in the world -- she did a great job."
It appeared that Kahuku might enjoy a relatively relaxing evening in the opening minutes of the contest. Five of Kaiser's first six possessions ended in Kahuku steals, and Wily drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Red Raiders an 11-2 lead.
Kaiser closed to within four in the second quarter, but Kahuku's size advantage allowed the Red Raiders to control the boards and shoot over the Kaiser zone in building a 32-21 halftime lead.
Wily hit her third trey of the night early in the third quarter to give Kahuku a 35-23 cushion. But the Cougars turned up the pressure on defense in the third quarter, turning steals into buckets to fuel a 9-0 run to get back in the game.
"We just made some adjustments. We went to our '40' defense, which is a trap, and worked it from there," Kaiser coach Glenn Higuchi said. "We stepped it up, but ran out at the end."
Ah-Hoy put Kahuku up by eight with 7:34 left in the game on a short jumper, but Kaiser battled back again as Pratt scored in the post and Bitanga drove the lane for a layup while being fouled. Her free throw with 5:07 left cut the Kahuku lead to 44-42.
But Kahuku got hot from the perimeter to put the game away. Lily Latu drained a jumper from the left wing and Wily nailed a trey from the top of the key to give the Red Raiders control of the game.
