Inmate’s wife admits she gave drugs to guard
The wife of an inmate at the federal detention center admitted to giving a prison guard drugs and drug paraphernalia intended for her husband.
Gabrielle Kupahu, 21, wife of inmate Robert Kupahu, pleaded guilty yesterday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie Kobayashi to providing crystal methamphetamine, marijuana and syringes to be delivered to her husband, a prison inmate, between August and September.
According to a superseding indictment, Kupahu allegedly asked his wife in August or September to buy five grams of crystal methamphetamine from his brother, John Kupahu.
Gabrielle Kupahu allegedly obtained the money to buy the "ice" from Marlene Astronomo, mother of inmate Keoki Astronomo, and the mother of inmate Keoni Hylton. Kupahu gave the drugs in protein supplement containers to guard Akoni Sandoval Kapihe, court documents said.
Kupahu faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison and up to $250,000 in fines when sentenced Sept. 14.
Robert Kupahu, Keoki Astronomo, Hylton and Edward Michael Ramos were charged with conspiracy and possessing a prohibited object in prison and are awaiting trial. Kapihe was charged Dec. 14 with providing Kupahu with the drugs.
