Kamehameha clips Punahou
The Kamehameha Warriors, riding a roller coaster between greatness and struggle all season, may have finally found some stability.
They can thank a sharpshooting freshman for their latest feat. Alexis Furtado drained a trio of clutch 3-point shots, all in the second half, as seventh-ranked Kamehameha stunned No. 2 Punahou 35-31 last night at Damien Memorial High School gym.
"Beating Punahou? It feels awesome," said Furtado, who is the daughter of longtime Kalaheo assistant coach Dave Furtado.
She sank her final 3-point shot, a 23-footer from the top, with 31 seconds left to give Kamehameha the lead for good, 33-31.
"I didn't know how far back I was," Furtado said.
Punahou guard Ciana Aiwohi missed two free throws with 11 seconds left, and Kamehameha senior Miki Nakamura hit the front end of her 1-and-1 with 7.5 seconds to go. That gave the Warriors a 34-31 lead.
Her miss on the second shot should have been a gift for Punahou, but rebounders Shawna-Lei Kuehu and Chelsea Deptula collided, and Kamehameha guard Tatriana Lorenzo scooped up the loose ball.
Lorenzo hit the first of her 1-and-1 free throws to put the game out of reach, 35-31, with 5 seconds to go.
The win kept Kamehameha, at 5-4 in the regular-season title chase of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (16-4 overall). Punahou dropped to 6-2 in league play (17-2 overall), one loss behind frontrunner Iolani.
Shawna-Lei Kuehu led the Buffanblu with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Shaena-Lyn Kuehu tallied 13 points and five boards. Aside from the Kuehu twins, no other Punahou player scored. The twins shot a combined 10-for-20 from the field, and their teammates were 0-for-13.
Furtado's emergence came just in time for Kamehameha, which was 1-for-6 from the arc without her. Punahou was ready for Furtado -- to an extent.
"We went 1-3-1 against their 1-3-1 (offense). She hits an NBA 3," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. "We know she can shoot. We know she can play. But she hits that NBA 3."

Furtado's minutes this year were limited -- until last night.
"Coach decided to put me in," she said. "In the beginning, I was a little nervous but Tatri (Lorenzo), Leah (Godinet) and Ana (Viena-Lota) said, 'You gotta step it up.' "
She swished a trey from the left wing shortly before the end of the third quarter to pull the Warriors within 23-21.
Moments later, she nailed a trey from the top to give Kamehameha its first lead since the opening quarter, 24-23. Both 3-pointers came off feeds from Miki Nakamura.
Punahou battled back. Kuehu hustled for a putback, then hit two foul shots to give Punahou a 27-26 advantage with 4:17 remaining.
Viena-Lota broke away on a fast break for a layup to give the lead back to Kamehameha, but Kuehu hit two more free throws, and Punahou led 29-28 with 3:49 left.
Aiwohi missed a pair of free-throw tries for Punahou, but Kuehu added two foul shots to give their team a somewhat comfortable 31-28 lead with 3:18 remaining.
After Furtado's only 3-point miss, Punahou had the ball and spread the floor with 2:28 left. However, the Buffanblu wilted. They committed one of their six fourth-quarter turnovers, and Nakamura answered for the Warriors with a 15-foot baseline jumper off a pass from Furtado. That brought Kamehameha within 31-30 with 55 seconds left.
Aiwohi was whistled for a 5-second violation just past midcourt despite Taylor's attempts to call a timeout.
That gave Furtado an opportunity to show her skills in prime time.
The game was originally scheduled at Punahou, but extracurricular festivities forced a change in location.
