Seasiders name Wagar as women's soccer coach
Former Brigham Young-Hawaii soccer player Justin Wagar was named the school's women's soccer coach for its inaugural season next fall.
Wagar spent the past year as interim head coach at Utah Valley State, leading the Wolverines to a 7-12 record. He was an assistant at the school for the previous two years.
» Oregon women's soccer player Nicole Garbin, a native of Wailuku, was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.
Garbin, who is the school's all-time leader in game-winning goals, assists, and shots, missed both the 2002 and 2004 seasons due to two ACL tears. In the past five seasons, the Ducks are 26-27-3 with her on the field, compared to 5-28-5 without the former Baldwin standout.
Rainbow Wahine rough up the Matadors
Iefke Van Belkum scored four goals and Kelly Mason and Lisa van Raalte added three goals as the fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team trounced Cal State Northridge 13-5 yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the MPSF Championships in Irvine, Calif.
The Wahine (15-9) scored six goals in the opening period and led 8-3 at halftime. Hawaii faces California today in the quarterfinals. A win would likely secure a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Battease out in Golden Gloves quarterfinals
Wahiawa's Brian Battease lost by decision, 5-0, to Texas' Sergio Perales in the quarterfinals of the 125-pound class in the National Golden Gloves competition yesterday at Omaha, Neb.
Battease advanced to the semifinals in the same division last year before losing to Waianae's Samson Guillermo, who ended up losing in the finals.
Hawaii-Hilo's Schonau earns rookie honors
Hawaii-Hilo freshmen Christian Schonau was selected the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region male rookie of the year. Schonau was 6-10 in singles competition and 6-11 in doubles, leading the Vulcans to a 6-14 record.
Big Island's Hernandez commits to Vulcans
Kamehameha-Hawaii senior middle blocker Kaniu Hernandez will stay close to home. She committed to the Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team yesterday.
Hernandez was a three-time All-BIIF selection, winning first-team honors her junior and senior seasons. She joins Honokaa's Wila Lavea and La Grande (Ore.) middle hitter Morgan Bonney as Vulcans' commits.
Rainbows baseball game close to a sellout
Only 600 tickets remain for tomorrow's baseball game between Hawaii and Sacramento State set for 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
In order to avoid long lines, the school is encouraging fans to buy tickets in advance through UH's new print at home system. About 2,000 tickets remain for tonight's game as well as Sunday's home finale.
Speed and quickness this weekend
Instruction at this weekend's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics focuses on NFL Combine-style events.
Participants will be taught proper technique in the 20- and 40-yard dashes, the pro agility shuttle and the vertical and broad jumps.
The clinics start at 8:30 a.m. (ages 7-12) and 10:30 a.m. (ages 13 and up).
